Book Week DIY: Unleash Your Creativity
Book Week is a cherished time of the year when we celebrate the joy of reading, the enchantment of stories, and the magic of characters that come to life through crafting. Follow us along as we dive into the world of DIY crafts to bring your favourite literary characters to life in the most delightful and tactile way. From whimsical bookmarks to charming book bags and a DIY of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," your creative journey can be filled with imagination and hands-on fun.
Craft 1: Felt Fabric Bookmarks
For the first ‘Book Week’ DIY, you can make a bookmark showing off your favourite character. Armed with colourful felt, paddle sticks, and your imagination, you can craft your very own personalised bookmark that saves that cliff-hanger of a page.
With precision cutting and some imaginative assembly, you can bring beloved characters to life, right on the pages of your favourite reads. We used iconic characters from ‘Mr. Men’ and ‘Little Miss,’ but you can choose your favourite character from a book to create your own unique bookmark. These whimsical companions add an extra layer of enjoyment to your reading experience, making every page turn feel like a delightful adventure.

Craft 2: Character-Embellished Book Bags
Continuing the creative journey, you can take your crafting skills to the next level by designing character-themed book bags. Using felt fabric, a tote bag, and a dash of creativity, you can transform simple book bags into a unique and eye-catching addition to this year’s ‘Book Week.’
On the front of this book bag, we glued on cut out pieces of felt fabric to create the character ‘Spot’ from the classic book, ‘Where’s Spot?’ Of course, you can add your favourite character, whether it is the mischievous antics of ‘Peter Rabbit’ or ‘Alice’ from ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ The possibilities are endless with this versatile and personalised book bag!

Craft 3: DIY "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"
One of the highlights of our Book Week DIY extravaganza was recreating Eric Carle's classic story, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." With felt, pom poms, pipe cleaners, and Joggle eyes at our disposal, you can create your own hungry little caterpillar.
With this DIY, you can transform it into a bookmark or glue it onto your own book bag. With these versatile materials you can create your favourite character from a book your reading... just make sure this hungry caterpillar doesn’t eat any of the pages!
